What is the significance with seuality, gender, race and class in the movie Far From Heaven?
These were topics traditionally ignored or even looked down upon during the 1950's. When bringing 1955 to 2002, we see how ridiculous people view interracial dating or even homosexuality. We would all like to think that times have changed for the better. Rather than living during the "Bad Old Days" I think that there is definitely some irony in the fact that these "issues" still exist. Our society has been enlightened since the 1950's, but to say that prejudice no longer remains would be stretching the truth.
When Franks character comes clean with his feelings for men, he sees a doctor to cure him. The only way Frank can be treated is to see a psychiatrist. After the guilt of cheating on his wife with a man soon dies down, Frank cleans up his act. Well, he put on an act like his problem was solved.
The relationship between Cathleen and Ray starts gossip around town and her husband becomes furious. Frank cheats with a man, but Cathleen's relationship with Ray will ruin his reputation? We are given this cookie cutter image of the perfect family towards the beginning of the movie. Cathleen is the trophy wife and homemaker, but her life is far from heaven.
